Episode – 49 Simon Bartholomew

Kieran and Derek are joined by the funk master Simon Bartholomew from The Brand New Heavies.
Simon Bartholomew is one of the icons British Acid Jazz (or Jazz-Funk). Bartholomew has the unique look that encompasses all things retro, his stylish fashion sense is unique and gives us an insight into the inspirational acts that shaped his sound and musical direction. Brothers International were formed in the mid-1980’s giving a British voice to the Jazz funk scene which was dominated by a slew of American acts.
The Brothers International evolved into The Brand New Heavies (BNH), with Simon Bartholomew in the center of it all. Jay Ella Ruth was their first vocalist, while he contributed his killer Funk rhythm guitar. In combination with fellow band members Jan Kincaid and Andrew Levy, they would create some of the most funky sounds ever. Hit singles such as Dream on Dreamer, Back to love, Sometimes and the fantastic of cover of Midnight at the Oasis would follow propelling the band to international success.
The most recent release TBNH has received glowing reviews and captures the funk sound from the early days of the band and evolves it into a funky feel good piece of work which has feelgood stamped all over it. A must listen in the current climate. The Brand New Heavies will be on the road in 2021/22 please visit https://www.tbnh.co.uk/ for all tour dates.
